This is the prerequisite before traveling. Is this country right for you? Do some researches of your own by talking to friends and online to find as much as you can about the country, the laws, climate and the people there.

In general, your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended stay. Also, before you go, fill in the emergency information page of your passport. Make photocopies of valuable travel documents including your passport, airline tickets, itinerary and Travelers’ Cheques. Leave a set with a friend or family member at home, and keep another copy in a separate place to the originals while overseas.

Travel insurance can be more expensive than traveling. So check your health and dental check-up before you leave. Bring an extra glass if you use contact lens. Also make sure you do not have any contagious diseases. Be informed about the latest diseases outbreaks such as Bird Flu.

Generally speaking, Travelers’ Cheques and international credit cards are the safest way to carry funds. It is advisable always to carry a small amount of local currency to pay bus or taxi fares or make small purchases or telephone calls. Beware of pickpockets, scam artists, over-friendly strangers, loiterers, etc.

While traveling it is important to keep in regular touch with your family and let them know of any changes to your travel plans. Establish an email address that you can access overseas. Contact your family and friends immediately if there is a natural disaster, major accident etc to let them know you are safe.

Obey the law. When overseas, avoid demonstrations and other situations that may become unruly. If you get into trouble, contact the nearest embassy for your country.
